Small Comforts
In last week's Edit Your Life episode, Asha Dornfest and I talked about small comforts and wow, that episode is really resonating with people. I'm just so happy that people are tuning into the tiny things around them that bring comfort because really, the tiny things are what we've got right now.
Also, this reminded me that I wanted to share a long-running, multidimensional small comforts story. Early on in the pandemic, Jon built a corner of floor to ceiling shelves for me. I decided to try to fill them with plant babies -- so, new pots of plants rooted entirely from plants I already have. Because PLANT THERAPY. I decided to focus on pathos variegations because they are easy to grow and hard to kill... because as much as I love plants, I'm not super awesome at maintaining them.
Anyway, the plant babies are still a work in progress, but then there's this artwork. You may recall back in November I shared about an art kit by my friend Carolyn Mackin. She does this beautiful textured stripe artwork and offers a kit and video series where you can learn how to recreate her stripes technique. Each kit comes with a set of four canvas papers and I made four "Cape Cod Stripes" paintings at once because this is how Christine Koh rolls. 😆 I kept one and gifted the other 3 to family members (we all were last together on the Cape two years ago so it was beautifully symbolic).
Well, Jon recently built a custom frame for my artwork based on existing scraps he had in his woodpile. As someone who is obsessed with using up things before getting more things, this meant a lot to me, not to mention the act of making my art look so legit.
So, SMALL COMFORTS: artwork inspired by a talented local artist, set in a handmade frame by my husband, surrounded by plant babies I have slowly been growing through this pandemic, on shelves built by my husband.
