Explore 2019: Restoring pantry order

Hello, real life. I like things tidy but holy crap, this super high traffic pantry closet in our kitchen/dining area has been a dumpster fire for, well, forever. Given the real feel of 105 degrees today I decided it was a good time to tackle this. Also, because I figured that when the school year rolls around the likelihood of me tackling this closet declutter would decrease exponentially.

Swipe through to see photos. I went from top to bottom and it was exhausting and OMG you guys I literally found grains that expired in 2012 and craft supplies from the same year. DUMPSTER FIRE.

I am SO THRILLED about this new situation. The top shelf is recyclable bags + dishtowels, aprons, and table linens. The second and third shelves are typical food items (grains, canned goods, cereal etc.). The really big wins are the 3 bottom shelves: The first includes kids lunchboxes, kids snacks (so they can pack/grab their own) + first aid supplies. Next down is art supplies. And the bottom is craft kits and gift wrap + the big open space is for backpacks. That is a big deal for us because we have an open concept first floor and backpacks are usually just lying around, which makes me nuts. Now there is a place to store them!

And most important, after I finished I showed my family the new system so they can help maintain it! Are you struggling with decluttering something in your house? I think my closet is next!

Not surprisingly, right after I finished, I messaged my pro organizer friend Rachel Rosenthal because I was like OMG WHERE IS MY GOLD STAR? Now I need a nap.
