January 2022 Reads

What books did you love this month? Here are the three reads I finished!

1. Science fiction is not normally my jam, but I was looking forward to reading "Klara and the Sun" by Kazuo Ishiguro given the rave reviews. I had very mixed feelings on it based on where my head was at; on the one hand, it was incredible to feel such quick, deep empathy for a robot. On the other hand, the perspective on human beings -- and what they will do to construct a world that works for them -- was depressing. I was somewhat relieved to finish the book and move on, though I say this fully appreciating the author's clean writing style.

2. My next read, "We Are Not Like Them" by Christine Pride and Jo Piazza was exactly what I needed; a current day story rooted in relationships. The dual perspective narrative was effective and the portrayal of the discomfort, blind spots, and realities of mixed raced relationships accurate. It was an empathy instilling and at times heartbreaking read.

3. I am always a little nervous when a sequel comes out when the first book knocks it out of the park, but “Finlay Donovan Knocks 'Em Dead” by Elle Cosimano, the follow up to “Finlay Donovan Is Killing It” is a total winner. It is a fun, readable ride with some unexpected twists and turns. And for fellow readers who love Finlay Donovan, the good news is that the closing looks like Cosimano is gearing up for book 3.
