Embrace 2020 4/365: editing the journey
Generally speaking, the strict cadence of fitness (and other) challenges can be very powerful to help people create change and habits, but given that I'm already committed to daily movement and am also very much about progress over perfection, I'm embracing taking on a physical challenge at my own pace... editing the journey, as it were.
I have heard a lot about Yoga With Adriene from my friend KJ Dell'Antonia, and when KJ recommended Adriene's 30-day yoga journey I was like, OK, yoga would be a good thing right now because unless I'm skiing, exercising outdoors can be hard this time of year, and if I'm not skiing, I'm probably recovering from the soreness associated with skiing! Also yoga at home is perfect for me; in this phase of life, gym/studio attendance feels too hard...for example, it took me 3 years to finish a 10-pack of yoga classes at a studio less than a mile from my house!
However, I knew from the outset that it's logistically challenging for me to do 30 days of yoga in daily sequence. I'm someone who needs to work out in the morning or just won't get to it, and on mornings (like yesterday) where I need to hop an early train to my work space and also get kids ready for school, morning yoga just isn't gonna happen (instead, my daily movement was the walk time in my commute + errands, about 3 miles total #everythingcounts). So, I'm committed to finishing the 30-day journey, but at a pace that is realistic with my schedule. If you want to join me on the journey, look up yoga with Adriene on YouTube! I just finished Day 2 and it was DELICIOUS (OMG neck massage while in rest pose FTW).
