Dancing with the Stars Roster = Meh

Oh bugger. After feeling as if Dancing with the Stars really found a way to offer something for everyone with its roster last year, I'm feeling rather unspired by this year's list. I pounced on the link with baited breath, then exhaled with a resounding, "Meh." Oh well, I suppose this is just as well for my productivity. Though if any of you want to offer arguments for why I should tune in, I'm all ears. I do like me some glittery dresses.

A Sucker for Spectacle

I wrote a few weeks ago about how Dancing With the Stars has figured out a way for there to be a little something for everyone roster-wise. People.com recently unveiled their Season 8 Pair Photos and I'm even more intrigued. What can I say -- I'm a sucker for spectacle.

I know I'm biased towards gymnastics, but how adorable yet grownup does Shawn Johnson look? And actually, now I wonder how tall Mark Ballas is. Shawn's little, and even in a knees bent position the height match looks good. Actually, it would make sense if he was on the shorter side, and subsequently gets matched with smaller contestants, since he was paired with Kristi Yamaguchi.

And is it just me or is it really apparent that Steve Wozniak refused to wear a blingy costume? Though maybe it was a big deal for him to wear a pink button down... Hope he cuts loose on the dance floor!

Something For Everyone

Though I didn't follow Dancing with the Stars last season due to disinterest in the roster (contrasting being glued to the set during the Kristi Yamaguchi season), Dancing apparently has - brilliantly - figured out a way for there to be a little something for everyone. People just posted on the new roster, which includes:

  • Love dramas: Singer Jewel competing against rodeo star husband Ty Murray, two-time Dancing champ-turned-country-singer Julianne Hough competing with country singer boyfriend Chuck Wicks, and real-life pro couple Maksim Chmerkovskiy and Karina Smirnoff competing against each other with their respective celebrity partners
  • Athletes: Shawn Johnson (gymnastics), Lawrence Taylor (football)
  • Singers: Belinda Carlisle, Lil’ Kim
  • Actors/TV personalities: Denise Richards, David Alan Grier, Gilles Marini, Steve-O (from Jackass), Nancy O'Dell (Access Hollywood)
  • League of his own: Apple computer co-founder Steve Wozniak
  • I don't know several of these people - or care about many of them - but Dancing has effectively lured me in. Most notably, I'll need to tune in to see how the adorable Shawn Johnson does in ballroom heels after going barefoot in the gym for so long, whether Denise Richards can go classy instead of trashy, and how tech dude Steve Wozniak will fare outside the Apple comfort zone.
